Keep this open while you call. Tick off the questions as you get answers, then compare each provider’s written scope.

• Name the systemIs it a central AC, mini-split or heat pump? Give the equipment brand and describe what changed without opening panels.
• Describe the symptomsTell the technician whether it runs, blows warm air, leaks water or makes a new noise. Ask what information helps them prepare.
• Separate diagnosis from repairAsk for the visit charge, after-hours terms and any credit toward approved work. A tune-up offer may not cover fault diagnosis.
• Ask what the repair includesGet parts, labor, refrigerant work if needed and any follow-up testing itemized in the estimate.
• Check the contractorAsk for the business name and responsible contractor’s license number. Use your state’s official lookup and confirm the work classification.

Compare the same job

Use the same model, symptoms and service location for each enquiry. Ask what is included, what might change after inspection and whether diagnosis is charged separately. An initial estimate is not a confirmed repair price.
